Wood decor glossary: shelf sitters, block sets and more
A shelf sitter is a free-standing wooden decoration made to sit on a shelf, mantel or desk. A block set is a group of small painted wooden blocks displayed together. A door hanger is a flat painted piece with a wire or ribbon hanger for a door or wall.
Shelf sitter
A free-standing wooden decoration, often shaped like an object such as a pumpkin, schoolhouse or snowman, made to sit on a shelf, mantel, desk or tiered tray.
Block set
Two or more small painted wooden blocks sold together and arranged side by side — for example letters spelling a word, or a trio of pumpkins. The blocks are usually separate so you can rearrange them.
Door hanger
A flat painted wooden piece with a wire, ribbon or grapevine hanger, made for a front door or wall.
Tiered tray decor
Small free-standing pieces sized to fit on a two- or three-level decorative tray, usually swapped out by season.
Monthly (interchangeable) welcome sign
A welcome sign with a hook and eyelet so small seasonal decorations can be swapped each month while the sign itself stays up all year.
Backer board
The flat base board behind a layered design, typically about 1/2" thick, that the cut-out pieces are mounted on.
Layered design
A piece built from several separately cut and painted parts stacked on top of each other, which gives it depth and dimension.
Clear coat
A protective transparent finish brushed over the paint to help protect it from moisture and wear, used on pieces meant for front doors.
Bookends
A pair of heavy, free-standing wooden pieces placed at each end of a row of books to hold them upright.
